Connecting with nature is non-negotiable nowadays. Heres why
22 October, 2021Fact: Spending time with nature is good for you.
A wealth of research says that going outdoors, especially in green spaces, benefits mental and physical health. However, the lockdown has denied some of us of this pleasure – the freedom to visit parks and travel. And it has taken a toll on our well-being.
Nature-Deficit Disorder
It has become tough to connect with nature as we shelter at home, especially if our place does not have enough space for a balcony or backyard.
So, it is easy to catch Nature Deficit Disorder (NDD). Coined by environmental writer Richard Louv, NDD is a form of suffering that arises from a sense of disconnection from nature and its powers. He argues that we are spending more time indoors, alienating ourselves from the earth’s bounty. Although a non-medical condition, NDD makes us more vulnerable to negative moods, reduced attention span, and poor health.
Why we need nature
As we stay indoors, with limited to no access to greenery, we are depriving ourselves of nature’s healing benefits like:
- Lowered stress, anger, and fear levels
- A boost in mood and pleasant feelings
- Improved memory and other cognitive abilities
- Decreased blood pressure
- Reduced risk of asthma, allergies, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease
Nature is vital in ensuring a holistic upbringing for children too. A study shows that “access and exposure to, and play in, nature can have profound positive effects on children’s emotional, physical, and psychological development and well-being.” It would be best if our children could grow up in homes where the greenery is accessible. This way, they can explore and grow with the natural world directly.
Moreover, nature bonds families and friends. Hiking, gardening, and engaging in other outdoor activities are fun ways to spend quality time with our loved ones.
How to bring back nature into our lives
Any interaction with green spaces can connect us with nature or living forms and help us reap its benefits. We simply could:
- Sit in the garden and watch a butterfly
- Spend time with the windows open to welcome fresh air and natural light
- Grow indoor and outdoor plants
- Take care of a pet
- Embellish your living space with a water fountain, crystals or natural rocks
- Listen to natural sounds like birdsong, ocean waves, or rainfall
But the best way we can encourage ourselves and our family to reconnect with nature is by living in the midst of it. Imagine waking up to a home surrounded by greens and blues, where you have ample space for a backyard with a small playground and garden, with unlimited access to the community’s exclusive amenities, where you and your little ones can safely play, exercise, and just have fun under the sun.
