Easy Houseplants Anyone Can Grow
03 December, 2021You may have noticed that lots of your family and friends suddenly have had green thumb since the start of the pandemic. It’s because as we stayed cooped up, it has become more important to bring nature indoors. After all, houseplants are a natural salve for our cravings for the outside world.

And believe it or not, plant parenthood is for everyone – and being born with a “green thumb” is just a myth. Anyone can grow a pot of plant beautifully with the right conditions.
If you want to start your plant parenthood journey, you can begin tending to low-maintenance houseplants. Here’s a list of low-maintenance greenery whether you live in a condo or not.
Snake Plant
Many starting plant parents get a snake plant as their first baby because it is known for being hardy and extremely easy to care for. It likes to dry between waterings and can thrive under low to medium light conditions. Very newbie-proof.

Selloum
Philodendron selloum is a pretty plant with large, shiny, showy leaves that’s perfect for beginners. It loves bright indirect sunlight and moist soil (not soggy). Remember not to overwater!

Golden Pothos
One of the easiest houseplants to grow and propagate, golden pothos is a must-have for every starting plant parent. This trailing vine is beautifully variegated with white, yellow, or pale green striations. It likes bright, indirect light but can also thrive in low-light areas. It also likes to have its soil dry out completely between waterings.

ZZ Plant
A drought-tolerant succulent, the ZZ plant has large rhizomes that store water. This means this vibrant and waxy plant needs water only about every three weeks when the soil is completely dry. It is also perfectly fine with low light conditions.

Before you shop for the right plant baby, evaluate your space, especially its brightness. Light to plants is like food to humans. When shopping, look closely at the plant. Choose healthy ones without brown spots and excessively wet or dry soil.
Research about the type of soil that your plant baby will thrive in. There are available ready-to-use grow medium or potting mixes in DIY shops, or your local hobby and hardware stores.
Beginners also tend to overwater plants, which can lead to root rot. Depending on where you place them, they may get more or less thirsty and require watering with more or less frequency. To figure out when to properly water your plants, insert your finger into the soil (about half an inch) and feel the moisture level. If it feels moist, try again in a couple of days. If it feels dry, you need to water.
